Chapter 11

“I’m sorry, did he just say, ‘fight a real monster?’” Devonna asked, and she shook her head. “I couldn’t have heard that right.”

“You did,” Randy told her with a small nod.

“I won’t put my women in danger,” I said seriously.

“I’m with Jake,” Shanice said, and she stepped up beside me. “We shouldn’t be seeking out monsters to fight. This is life or death.”

“Every situation in here is life or death,” Randy countered.

“Exactly,” I agreed. “Which is why we should take them incredibly seriously. I’m not putting my team at risk.”

“Nothing is going to happen to your team,” Randy assured me in a calm voice. “I know this swamp like the back of my hand. All I’m asking is for you to trust me.”

“I don’t think we can do that.” Shanice shook her head. “Not on this. The monsters in this room are unlike any we’ve seen before.”

“Da.” Natasha gestured to my arm. “We were here a day, and Jake nearly got arm bit off. Is too dangerous.”

“Whoever made this place is probably trying to challenge Randy,” Sarah said, and she looked at the old man. “You’ve been in here a long time, so it would make sense that they keep throwing new, more horrible monsters your way to try and get rid of you.”

“I never thought of it that way,” he said. “But you’re probably right.”

“Either way, the monsters here are crazy,” Sarah sighed.

“You’ve got to trust me,” Randy said, and he looked at each of them in turn. “I’m not going to let anyone get hurt. We’re just going to find something for you women to go up against, show everyone what you’ve learned today.”

“You want us to put our lives on the line just so we can prove to you that we learned somethin’ today?” the Southern woman scoffed.

“No.” He stared at her with unwavering conviction. “I want you to fight now, in a safe environment, before I send you out into the real world where you could easily get killed.”

“Well, damn,” Devonna mumbled and crossed her arms over her chest. “When you put it that way…”

“Jake?” Shanice asked, and she looked to me for guidance.

I let out a deep sigh, but then I nodded and turned to Randy. “Alright. But I’m holding you accountable for any injuries. And whatever happens to them is going to happen right back to you.”

“Fair enough,” the old man chuckled, and I was almost relieved that he didn’t seem concerned about my threat.

“Where are we going?” Shanice asked.

“Don’t worry,” Randy told her. “You’ll see soon enough. Before we leave, you all need to get your weapons. I had Eileen sharpen them for you while we were working.”

“You don’t even know where we’re goin’, do ya?” Devonna asked with a shake of her head. “We just gotta wander around and hope we find some monster to battle.”

“I know exactly where I’m going,” Randy said. “I already told you, I know this swamp like the back of my hand. Including the monsters.”

“Wait, so you know where all the monsters live?” Sarah asked, and her dark brown eyes narrowed on the man.
